During the E3 2018 gameplay demo for The Last of Us Part 2, we saw Ellie completely alone, murdering large numbers of enemies and fighting only for her own survival. However, that will apparently not be indicative of the final game.
Much like in the first game – which featured Joel as the main protagonist, and Ellie as a companion – in the sequel Ellie will have a companion character. This news comes from an interview between writer and co-director Neil Druckmann and Buzzfeed, but the interview did not shed any light on who the companion would or would not be.
Well, so, Ellie used to be an NPC, but she’s the protagonist in this story, so the player is controlling Ellie. It’s safe to say with the game that we made in the past that there will be some NPC with you in this story, even though we’re not showing [the NPC] in this demo.
So far, there has been no official word on what role Joel will play in The Last of us Part 2, but it feels unlikely he'll be playing sidekick to Ellie. I'm quietly hoping that the girl Ellie kissed at the dance in the E3 trailer is her companion, and they both survive the whole game, and I get to play the whole game with a cute pair of queer ladies supporting each other through tough times. Maybe that's optimistic, but I'm crossing my fingers.
