Phil Spencer Says Xbox is "Hard at Work on E3"

Last night, Sony confirmed that it would not be attending E3 - the second year in a row that the publisher has chosen to skip the expo. Microsoft has been quick to respond to the announcement, with Xbox lead Phil Spencer telling fans that his team "is hard at work on E3."

In a tweet early this morning, Spencer said that "we look forward to sharing with all who love to play what's ahead for us. Our artform has consistently been propelled by the cross-section of creativity and technical progress. 2020 is a milestone year in that journey for Team Xbox."

That's likely to refer to the Xbox Series X. While Sony is yet to properly show off the PlayStation 5, Microsoft has at least provided a sneak peek at its new console. Sony is expected to use one of a number of upcoming events to show off its new arrival, but Microsoft's biggest offering, XO, takes place in the autumn, which doesn't leave enough time for pre-Christmas marketing spin.

It's not particularly surprising that Microsoft would choose to commit to E3 again. Over the past few years, the company has continued to have a major presence at the event, often unveiling dozens of games. While questions still need to be asked of the expo's continued relevance, Xbox seems set to remain a big part of it for a few years yet.
