One of Sony’s biggest annual franchises is going multi-platform. In an announcement this morning, alongside Major League Baseball, announced that its MLB The Show will be heading to new platforms “as early as 2021.”
A press release from Sony and MLB announced that they have “entered into multi-year extensions” for MLB The Show, which is developed by Sony San Diego, ensuring many more iterations of the franchise. This new agreement also ushers in a “historic expansion” of the partnership, which “will bring MLB The Show, for the first time ever, to additional console platforms.”

We’re still a few years out from MLB’s first official outings on Xbox and Switch, but there’s still potential for an interesting precedent to be set here. Sony San Diego was established nearly two decades ago, and has never created a game for a third-party platform in that time. Given its current first-party prowess, for Sony to be sending its franchises further afield is a notable step.
