The Outlast series is returning, but not as you know it. Announced last night, The Outlast Trials is a multiplayer-coop take on the horror series that’s set in the same world as previous entries, but doesn’t follow on from the same story.
The Outcast Trials takes up to four players back in time to the Cold War era, and puts them in the role of test subjects taking part in a mysterious experiment. It’s not Outlast 3 then, but developer Red Barrels has previously said that it will eventually make a third full-fledged entry in the series.
It’s not entirely clear how the multiplayer aspect will work, but we do know that if you’re more interested in a more traditional solo experience, you can play on your own. It’s likely to be a while before we find out more - Red Barrels says that the game is in “the early stages of production,” and while more details are promised soon, there’s no word on a release date.
