Last night, Apple unveiled its new AirPods Pro. The next generation of the wireless earbuds features noise-cancelling technology, and will cost £250 when they release in the UK tomorrow. What Apple may not have been counting on, however, is that for many gaming fans, the new airpods look pretty familiar.
Almost immediately after Apple’s announcement last night, people took to Twitter with a variety of game-themed comparisons, mostly driven by the flexible silicon tips that have been added to the new models. The airpods were compared to Qbert’s impressive snout, as well as Plants vs Zombies Peashooter, but the most impressive range of likenesses came from Nintendo’s games.

Some noted the Airpod Pro’s similarity to the mouth of the F.L.U.D.D from Super Mario Sunshine, but it’s the combination of a round head a big ol’ snoot that really captured the imagination. The round head and open earbud reminded one Mario fan of Birdo, but the real star of the show is Bellsprout, whose uncomfortably puffy, round mouth is near-indistinguishable from Apple’s latest product.

Elsewhere, people have been comparing the new airpods to everything from hairdryers to Pingu, but for my money, Bellsprout is the real winner. I’m just hoping that i don’t have to see Weepinbell’s terrifying face on my timeline as a result.
