The success of Gears 5 means that a sequel seems relatively likely, but a potential sixth outing could draw from some surprising inspiration. In a conversation on a recent podcast, The Coalition art director Aryan Hanbeck said he’s encouraging his team to learn from The Handmaid’s Tale.
Speaking to Iranian composer Hamidreza Nikoofar on his podcast, Wassup Conversations (via IGN), Hanbeck said that “I’ve been telling all the artists nonstop to go watch Handmaid’s Tale. The composition, the colour, and just the cinematography and symbolism is just off the charts. So, I watched that and I’m like ‘Wow, we need to find a way to get more of this stuff in Gears 6’.”
While the TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel is a surprising direction for Gears of War to take, Hanbeck says that he’s also been inspired by some more traditional sources, including Destiny 2.
While the discussion isn’t an official announcement of Gears 6, Hanbeck seems to be hunting for inspiration for a new game in the series. Given that Gears 5 was the series most-successful launch to date, that’s no surprise, but expect to be waiting a little while for confirmation from The Coalition.
