World of Warcraft's New Alliance Races Look... Familiar

By Alistair Jones on at

Last night, Blizzard announced the next update for Battle for Azeroth. Called Visions of N’zoth, the new content arrived on the game’s public testing realm last night, and its headline change is the arrival of two new races.

When the update arrives (there’s no release date for it just yet) the Alliance will be joined by the fox-like Vulpera, and the cyborg-like Mechagnomes. That’s all well and good, except that when standing side-by-side, the new races resemble classic PlayStation franchise Ratchet & Clank.

While, in fiction, Ratchet is technically part of an alien race called the Lombax, his design was impacted by small terrestrial mammals. It’s those ears that really bring the comparison to life though - the Vulpera clearly borrow the fennec fox’s impressive facial features, and Ratchet isn’t exactly lacking in that department. As for Clank, the likeness is immediately apparent, especially once you compare him to the fully-robotic version of the mechagnome.

The similarities weren’t lost on the WoW community, who lost no time in likening their new Alliance arrivals to the iconic duo. Sadly, while the comparison is undeniable, I feel like neither race is going to have quite as many gadgets at their disposal as Ratchet & Clank’s seemingly endless arsenal.
