Revealed as part of today's Pokémon themed Nintendo Direct presentation, which lasted just seven minutes, the brand new Gen 8 Pokémon RPGs coming to Switch have been officially unveiled. They are: Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.
Based on the initial reveal trailer shown, it appears the game will have no visible wild Pokémon on the overworld, moving away from the visible creatures of 2018's Let's Go and back to random battles. It also appears that battles with wild Pokémon are back, rather than simply catching them for experience points.
The games take place in a brand new region known as Galar, but will feature a mixture of old and new creatures. Galar looks to feature a mix of industrial cities, wide open fields, and snowy mountains, and looks in areas like it might be based around UK architecture.
Environments are larger, more detailed, and less grid like than Let's Go, likely due to not needing to recreate decades old town designs.
The game features three new starter creatures: the fire rabbit Scorbunny, water frog Sobble, and grass monkey Grookey.
The games will release worldwide in late 2019 on Nintendo Switch.
