Team Mako are Splatoon 2 UK Champions and Off to the World Championship

The Splatoon 2 UK Championship was held in Birmingham this weekend and, even though Mako sharks have some problems IRL, in the virtual realm they reign supreme. The reigning UK champions, Team Mako, emerged as winners after a close-fought final against Team 4D, meaning that they'll go on represent the UK in the grand final of the European Championship.

Following the match Hisashi Nogami, producer of Splatoon 2, announced the European Championship 2018–2019 grand final will take place in Paris over the 9th and 10th March 2019. Nogami went on to detail what is likely to be the game's last major update, due for all players on December 5 2018:

The gear abilities Bomb Defence Up and Cold-Blooded will be combined into the new Bomb Defence Up DX ability, giving the full effects of both abilities in one.

Main Power Up is a brand new ability that will improve the performance of main weapons in different ways, such as increasing damage, upping the size of the area covered by ink, and more. Main Power Up will be available through some gear items sold at shops in Inkopolis Square and in the SplatNet gear shop, or as an unlocked ability when select gear levels up.
The final new weapons will be added – Ballpoint Splatling Nouveau, Nautilus 79, Custom Explosher, and Bloblobber Deco, as well as four new weapon sets from the Toni Kensa Collection

Nintendo's interpretation of online services is oft-bemoaned by some, but the company has really pushed the boat out in terms of post-launch support for first Arms and now Splatoon 2. The latter does offer substantial paid DLC but, even if you skipped that, an enormous amount of value has been added for one-time purchasers.

Team Mako are one of a dozen teams that will take part in the grand finals to decide the Splatoon 2 European champions. The reigning champs are the German team BackSquids (great name) who last year went on to reach the World Championship final, only to lose out to Japan's also-amazingly-named GGBoyz.

Come on Team Mako. God knows that, come next March, the UK public will probably need any distraction from the real world we can get.
