Everyone's favourite slightly-rubbish fad, Pokémon Go, is offering up some... unusual bonuses for trainers this Valentine's day.
This is 2017's first Go event, and runs from 7pm GMT on February 8th to 7pm February 15th. Over this period players get double candy for catching, hatching and transferring Pokémon. Your buddy Pokémon will also find candy twice as fast. OK so that's nice, well done Niantic, we all like a bit of candy even if it's virtual.
Oh wait, there's more. "In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, adorable pink Pokémon including Chansey, Clefable, Porygon, and others will have increased spawn rates. In addition, Pokémon like Cleffa, Igglybuff, and Smoochum will have a higher chance of hatching from Eggs." To me the spirit of Valentine's Day isn't exactly captured by the idea of babies popping out everywhere, even if that may be a long-term consequence. And why are they all pink and cute? Let me tell you, they may start off that way...
The coup de grace for Pokémon Go's Valentine celebration, however, has to be the lures. "Trainers can also celebrate together by deploying Lure Modules that will attract Pokémon for six hours, as opposed to thirty minutes, for the duration of the event." Got to love the optimism. You noticed that girl a while ago, pluck up the courage to ask her out on Valentine's Day and - yes! Triumph! Now to show her a good time by dropping a Pokémon lure that lasts for six hours rather than the standard 30 minutes.
So the spirit of Valentine's Day runs strong in Pokémon Go. Get lots of candy, lure Pokémon in and whack them with balls, then enjoy the crickle-crackle of eggs as little baby Pokés hatch.
