New Warhammer 40K Game Has Tyranids, Space Marines and Sad Pianos

What on Earth has happened to Warhammer 40,000? It's only been a year-and-a-bit since 2013's Space Hulk had us clomping through corridors splattering aliens, and in the interim it's chucked out the Terminators and wheeled in the pianists. Just look at this teaser for Deathwatch: Tyranid Invasion! It's gone all Dead Island.

That said, as the teaser is pretty much all we have to go on right now, here is some lightning-quick analysis:

First, the Space Marines featured are part of the titular Deathwatch - an elite alien-hunting division comprised of warriors from across the different Space Marine chapters (hence the Ultramarine and Space Wolves chapter shoulders in the video).

Second, you'll be squaring off in tactical turn-based combat against Tyranids in general this time - not just the Genestealer scouts/shock troops from Space Hulk. We don't see many subspecies in the teaser, but there's a few hefty-looking Warrior corpses lying about; some smaller, nippier Termagants; and a few Genestealers right at the video's fade-out.

Third, the description under the video (and in the game's press kit) gives us a bit of a better idea about where these two forces will clash, promising battles in "war-ravaged cities" and "the insides of Tyranid bio-ships." You'll also be raising your squad up "in strength and skill" as you go (in what sounds a bit like the progression in XCOM) and equipping them with "over 200 different weapons and wargear relics."

Finally, the game is coming out this Summer for iOS. Which is a bit of a bum note to end on. However, developer Rodeo Games is also the studio behind 2013's Warhammer Quest, which released on both iOS and Steam - so abate your iOS exclusivity fretting for the time being and place your faith in The Emperor.
