Sid Meier's New Game is Starships

The new project "focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration" says Sid.

If the new game, Starships, sounds a bit like a continuation of the ideas in Civilization: Beyond Earth, that's because it is, with Sid explaining to GameSpot that "I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth. What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars? What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth?"

That's evolved into a new turn-based strategy game where you control a fleet of ships and try to build a planetary federation. The only mission vaguely outlined so far is 'protecting planets', although there's talk of unique maps and "dynamically generated tactical combat" as you try to build up your power base. That includes acquiring and developing technology, and building up a fleet of custom spacecraft. "My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration," explains Sid.

Anyone else getting a distinctly Star Trek vibe here?

It's coming to PC, Mac and iPad in 'early 2015'.
