For fantasy buffs of a certain age, there's a series of books dearer to our hearts than Lord of the Rings or even—dare I say it—Harry Potter. I'm talking about Redwall, the kid-friendly epic that reads like Games of Thrones with cute furry little animals instead of gratuitous raunchy sex. Unlike those other series, however, Redwall has remained impervious to any sort quality adaptation. This has left lovers of the series (like yours truly) feeling sadly jilted by the as-yet-unfulfilled promises of a true video game adaptation.
Armello isn't a one-to-one recreation of author Brian Jacques' classic work. But as League of Geeks head Trent Kusters explains to me in the video up top, his upcoming digital board game owes a great deal to the series.
Kusters walked me through a match of multiplayer-friendly game. It's always hard to judge games like this based on a single demo, since so much of what makes the whole experience fun comes down to the smallest details about how the different characters balance against one another. But watching Kusters play through a round, I got more and more excited about taking this game online once it's fully up and running. Because, I mean, who doesn't want to fit against an armoured lion with a sword-wielding mouse?
Check out our impressions in the video. And if you like what you see, consider supporting Armello on Kickstarter.
