Struggle with eye contact? Find being an approachable, pleasant human being too draining? Then Doctor Hirotaka Osawa has the answer: hideous fake eyes that do all the work for you.
Hirotaka works at Tsukuba University and created the device to help with something he calls 'emotional labour'. The idea behind it is that having to be nice and friendly when you don't want to saps your mental strength, especially when it's something you have to do for a living. "This emotional support reduces a user's cognitive load for social manners," says Hirotaka, staring fixedly at us with flickering dead eyes.
This isn't the future Deus Ex promised at all.
