The New Resident Evil 2 Isn't a Shot-for-Shot Remake

Resident Evil 2, originally released back in 1998, is getting a new version on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in the near future. Most people, myself included, have been casually referring to it as 'Resident Evil 2 Remake', regardless of the term 'remake' not being in the title, mostly for simplicity's sake. However, according to an interview with GamingBolt, there's a very specific reason Capcom didn't include the word remake in the title of this new version of the game.

Mike Lunn, brand manager for Capcom, explained that the core reason for not including remake in the game name was because this new version will not be a direct remake of the original:

“It won’t be faithful one to one. For someone that’s played the game, some people played it once and some people played it a thousand times because it’s their favourite game. For the people that have even played it a thousand times, we wanted it to feel fresh. That’s why we don’t call it Resident Evil 2 Remake. It’s a new game built on top of the foundation.”

“So for example, there is a part where you’re walking through the police station, and a lurker walks by the window. In the original game that happens every single time. We don’t include that because of the jumpscares, the puzzles, and because we want you to be challenged by that stuff. We want you to be scared by that stuff, not just repositioned to a new part of the building, but sort of reimagined. Because we don’t want you to know exactly how the puzzles are solved, we don’t want you to know exactly where the enemies are going to be. We want to surprise you. So, we have changed things a bit. But on the whole, the main idea, the main arcs of the story are very similar. But there are going to be some new surprises in there as well.”

So, if you played the original 1998 Resident Evil 2, the aim is that you won't just be able to waltz through this new version of the game relying on past knowledge to keep you safe. Whether the new version of the game will be as good as the original, we will have to wait and see, but it seems at least there will be new surprises awaiting players.

Resident Evil 2 is set to release on 25th January 2019.
