As a previously unannounced reward for reaching three billion catches worldwide during the past week's Pokémon Go global capture challenge, Niantic has made a new legendary raid available for the next two weeks. Yep, if you go out to your local raid spot starting today, you may find a Ho-oh raid waiting for you.
Ho-oh will only be around for a couple of weeks, and is one tough cookie, so if you're lucky enough to spot a raid then here are some tips for defeating and capturing one.
First up, while the raid has a recommended team size of 20 players, a bit of experimentation suggests that a team of eight to ten can take down the behemoth. You'll need decent players though, and it may be a bit close to the line on time. As always, local Pokémon Go raid Facebook groups seem to be the easiest way to organise a team for a particular raid instance.
Regarding team selection, you're going to want as many sturdy and heavy-hitting electric, rock and water type Pokémon as possible in your party. Golem, Omastar, Tyranitar, Zapdos, Raikou and Vaporeon are currently the best team picks available. Ho-oh deals heavy damage, but has a relatively low defence, so your biggest challenge is surviving its biggest hits.
When it comes to catching a defeated Ho-oh, the blazing bird seems to move around in a very similar pattern to Lugia, the previous raid battle. Take your time and wait until it calms down and stops moving for a moment before trying a throw, and don't get frustrated if you miss with a couple of balls or the damn thing keeps popping out. The catch rate for Ho-oh seems pretty low, so be prepared to tackle the raid more than once.
Good luck, and may your raid end up legendary.
