Project M is a well-regarded Smash Bros mod (so well-regarded, in fact, that it still frequently appears at pro Smash Bros tournaments), that sought to combine elements of the GameCube's Smash Bros Melee with the Wii's Smash Bros Brawl. Work on Project M concluded in 2015, and now the the team behind it has revealed the first footage of its brand-new game...which looks very much like Smash Bros.
Icons: Combat Arena, as the new game is known, is set to be free-to-play, and is the work of Wavedash Games, a studio consisting of both former Project M developers and new talent from all across the games industry. According to Wavedash's website, that talent includes former staff of Riot, Blizzard, Bioware, Sony, and Twitch. Here's a look at Icons in action!
Needless to say, the game's...striking similarity to Smash Bros has already raised a few eyebrows. Not only does it feature similar fighting mechanics, stage design, and characters to Nintendo's legendary series, it appears to include near-cloned move sets too. Unsurprisingly, fan opinion seems divided, ranging from "Looks great! Especially for pre-alpha footage", on YouTube (where I go for all my fan opinion), to "Looks like a chinese bootleg of Smash."
However, if you're intrigued by what you see, you might like to know that Icons: Combat Arena is due to enter beta on PC this autumn, with a full release due sometime next year. You can sign up for more info over on its official website.
