Kanye West is a mercurial man: remember how many times he changed the title for the album that eventually became The Life of Pablo? Earlier this year, however, he claimed that his next album would be titled “Turbo Grafx 16,” which is a video game console. Judging from some recent Instagram posts, it’s possible that Kanye really wasn’t joking about hitting some “super nerd vibes” with his follow-up.
As spotted by neoGAF, hip hop producer Pete Rock — who previously worked with Kanye on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — posted a few videos online recently, where he claims to be “in da lab with Kanye West.” In these posts, you can spot what appears to be either a track list or a sample list:
It’s a roster that includes somewhat esoteric games such as No More Heroes, Red Steel 2, Sin & Punishment 2, along with more popular games, like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Some have speculated that it may even be Kanye’s handwriting, though it’s hard to tell.
It’s also possible this is just a random piece of paper in the studio; maybe someone has a backlog of old games to clear. Who knows! I for one am crossing my fingers that this turns out to be legit, and that consequently, the world gains a renowned interest in cool Wii games following the eventual release of Turbo Grafx 16. It seems plausible: some of the biggest hits of the last few years, such as Hotline Bling, sampled video games. Kanye himself continued the long hip hop tradition of sampling Street Fighter recently with the song FACTS.
Then again, this sure is a long list of non Turbo Grafx 16 games.
