Despite being popular to an near-incomprehensible degree, Five Night at Freddy's is a horror series that's managed to almost entirely pass me by. Partly that's because I'm not a member of its inexplicably huge pre-teen fanbase, and partly that's because my tolerance for jump scares has, in recent years, plummeted to roughly the same level as my tolerance for being punched in the nose.
While I clutch my heart in pre-emptive fear of loud noises (such as the doorbell and a man coughing in the next room), however, Five Night at Freddy's developer Scott Cawthon sits elsewhere, gleefully rubbing his hands together while planning his next grasp for scary-bear-based global domination.
To wit, over on Scott's official website, a mysterious new teaser image for something called Sister Location has appeared, enigmatically asserting in big blue text that there was never just one.
"But what could it all mean?", I hear you cry. Well, perhaps the familiar-looking animatronic skull languishing in the background might offer some clues. Could Sister Location mark a return to the Freddy Fazbear universe, despite Scott's assertion that the previous Five Nights at Freddy's game would be the last in the series?
Are we due a visit to a previously unknown second branch of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, the terrifying eatery of fear that started it all? Will we learn that the demonic animatronic Freddy Fazbear has an evil lady-twin? It's unclear whether we're being teased a sequel, a spin-off, or even something else entirely – but somewhere, somebody (who is probably seven), is getting very excited indeed.
