Gears of War made its mark in the mainstream with a television trailer that combined the games grimdark world with the haunting song Mad World, by Gary Jules. It's one of the most iconic game trailers of the last decade and Microsoft has brought it back with the release of the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.
The remastered game is shown off in the new trailer, which pulls in different footage while setting it to the same song.
Microsoft has used the same technique of mixing its action game adverts with off-tone music ever since. For instance, here's Halo 3's 'Believe' ad.
Maybe now Microsoft has gone full circle it will move onto a whole new advertising standard. I've my fingers crossed for a return to silent movies, maybe with the sheet music sent to your phone for the full second-screen experience.
