An Oculus Rift spokesmen has apparently outlined plans to make the headset available to the public next year, apparently stating that the company would be "disappointed" if it wasn't out by 2016.
The info from a Business Week interview via Gizmodo UK making a Christmas 2015 launch sound likely. However, more interesting is talk of the mysterious Valve Room where a new, "more powerful and impressive" headset is tethered to banks of servers to power the display. The following description of the equipment comes from Andreessen Horowitz's Chris Dixon, an Oculus Rift investor:
"You go into a room. It's a special room. Fancier headset. ... In user testing it gets to a level of realism where almost all people feel that it's realistic. Imagine everything you can see now, but it's a little bit pixelated. Eventually that [pixelation] will go away."
